Corn and Pickle Festival
I've been making homemade pickles for many years. I had a friend teach me how to make pickles when my husband was still in the Air Force. He taught me how to make his mother’s recipe for Hot Dill Pickles. Remember this: when you learn from a true master, they can teach you the real tips to success. His pickles are soooooo… good that people wait in line for a jar or even hoard the only jar they have left for years! I hope someone will say the same about my pickles someday.
Now about the festival. In 2007 Debi Vogel came up with an idea to promote our farms. She said since my pickling cucumbers were so popular (and she liked my pickles) and her sweet corn was ripe about the same time we should create an event. That was 2007. We set up a table in an open-front barn on a newly poured concrete pad. We put out a few chairs and were surprised and excited that we had 38 people come to visit. Each year we expanded on our event plans and added more vendors or crafts people. Pretty soon we were having trouble figuring out parking. Next someone asked can you do Bread and Butter pickles? I learned to do them and added another of my family’s favorites, Cinnamon Pickles.
